Main Benefits Of The New Lighting System

1 - 45% reduction in energy consumption
2 - Projected 10 year lamp life (on 24/7)
3 - Onsite lighting lux levels more than quadrupled
4 - Near-daylight quality of light in the workspace
Germains Seed Technology (part of the Associated British Foods parent group) provides a full range of seed enhancement technologies for sugar beet and also for over 100 varieties of horticultural crops (predominantly lettuce and salad crops).The work undertaken on their King's Lynn site consists of the various stages of processing sugar beet seeds in order to enhance their natural potential.

The challenge...
Germains contacted Green Business Light seeking an energy efficient lighting solution to replace the outdated fluorescent tube lights which were being used in the works area of their King's Lynn site.

In consultation with the project team Green Business Light established that the main requirements were as follows:
  • To significantly enhance the lighting levels on the site (to "best practice" lux levels);
  • To produce a high quality white light for onsite workers;
  • To reduce the necessity for lamp replacement;
  • To reduce the business carbon footprint and energy expense
The new lighting system...
Based on the feedback from a lighting trial of LED and induction light fixtures (organised by elected members of the Green Business Light lighting network), the decision was made to install a new lighting system based on induction lamp technology. In total, 50 outdated twin tube T12 fixtures were replaced by 42 x 150W induction low bay fixtures..

The new lights result in energy savings of 45% - however - the lux levels were increased from 30-50 lux to 200-250 lux and the high "colour rendering index" of the induction lamps provided a further boost to the perceivable light levels.
Feedback on the Green Business Light service...
Tom Greenacre (engineering & maintenance manager) commented "The service from Green Business Light was excellent - being able to get a free trial of different lighting technologies and see the lighting for ourselves really made a difference to our project. The lighting we have now actually appears much brighter for the level of lux that is being measured."
