Return on investment from new lighting

In a typical large commercial or industrial building there will be no carbon reducing initiative which provides a quicker return on investment than upgrading to energy efficient lighting.

Payback of investment...

Why is the payback so quick for energy saving lighting?
A GREEN BUSINESS LIGHT CASE STUDY

The proposal - Green Business Light was approached by the site manager of an electronics component warehouse with a request to help them reduce their energy consumption. The warehouse used approximately 350 sodium high bay lights (with lamps rated at 400 Watts each) which were activated for the equivalent of 24 hours a day, 300 days per year.

What we did - Green Business Light prepared a free draft report detailing the energy and cost savings that would be made from installing new energy efficient lighting fixtures. This report outlined payback periods of 18 & 24 months based on the direct energy savings of two different lighting options.

The outcome - With this information on payback times, the site manager was able to request a budget for the project and came back to Green Business Light to instruct us to obtain quotations from members of our own UK-wide supplier network.

Many carbon reduction projects can take a long time to recoup the investment - e.g. onsite renewable energy generation (solar panels, wind turbines) - may have payback periods of between 10 - 20 years.

The payback period (the time taken for the generated cost savings to cover the outlay) for energy efficient lighting installation projects may be less than 12 months - but is usually between 2-3 years at most. This quicker payback is due to:
  • Large energy savings - the recent advances in lighting technologies providing up to an 80% energy saving on outdated light fixtures
  • Excessive use of existing lighting - it is not uncommon for existing lighting to be used very inefficiently (a "24 hour" setting" when large areas are unoccupied etc.)
  • Business electricity costs - a high unit price paid for business electricity (e.g. - above 8p/kwh day rate) will produce a very quick payback for a lighting project
  • Further savings - There will usually be additional financial savings such as a reduced necessity of maintenance (costly if lights are difficult to access etc.) or recued heat loads in temperature controlled areas
