The headline benefits of LED lights (see bottom of this page) certainly make them a very attractive energy saving proposition. However, the LED lighting industry is young, with not yet fully developed standards and terminology - the result is that the capabilities of some LED low-bay light fixtures are being oversold. Many inferior quality products may damage the reputation of LEDs as a viable light source.

Presently there are only a few solutions on the market which can produce adequate illumination levels at low-bay light fixture mounting heights and provide the claimed 50000 hour+ lifetimes. In your industrial buildings there may currently be outdated and inefficient low bay bay lighting fixtures that use low intensity discharge lamps (high-pressure sodium or metal halide) or older T8 or T 12 fluorescent tubes. You may now be considering an LED low bay light solution to save energy - what do you need to be aware of?

The higher the light fixture mounting height, the harder that LED components need to work to produce acceptable illumination levels. Any LED fixtures can be programmed to produce this higher light level but possibly at the expense of the operational lifetime. So, the design & manufacture of the light fixture is key as poor quality products may allow the LED components to overheat and expire well before the claimed lifetimes (producing the same life as an HID lamp).

Presently, a good quality LED low-bay light fixture will be 2-3 times the cost of other energy efficient light solutions (call us for prices). However, you need to work with a supplier who fully understands the illumination requirements of low bay lighting - a high price tag is still no firm guarantee of achieving high performance and long lifetimes.
